Die Komposition basiert auf dem Gedicht “Durcheinander” von Erich Fried. Einander lieben und zugleich einander töten können: ein kaum auszuhaltender Widerspruch ist in der Natur des Menschen angelegt. Erich Fried schneidet diesen Widerspruch in seinem Gedicht Zeile für Zeile aneinander und macht die Absurdität und die Ohnmacht angesichts dessen fühlbar. Die Vertonung greift diese Ohnmacht auf - immer wieder kehrt die Melodie zu diesem zart ansteigenden Thema des Anfangs in lieblichem Fis-Dur zurück. Bei aller beschriebenen Grausamkeit des Menschen, die im Klavier durch manche dissonanten Akkorde gespielt ist - die Singstimme lässt sich von der Gewalt nicht anstecken, sie spannt einen zärtlichen Bogen über sie und verwandelt sie in etwas Schönes.

The composition is based on the poem "Durcheinander" by Erich Fried. To love one another and at the same time be able to kill one another: a contradiction almost unbearable is inherent in human nature. Erich Fried addresses this contradiction line by line in his poem, making the absurdity and powerlessness in the face of it tangible. The setting takes up this powerlessness - time and again, the melody returns to the gently rising theme of the beginning in a lovely F-sharp major. Despite the described cruelty of humanity, which is played on the piano through some dissonant chords, the vocal line is not infected by the violence; it spans a tender arc over it and transforms it into something beautiful.
