Information

“Coincidentia” (lat. das Zusammenfallen) ist das scheinbar zufällige Zusammentreffen gleichzeitiger Ereignisse. Drei musikalische Ebenen begegnen sich, erfüllt von kleinen Motiven und langen Bögen. Das Spiel der Musiker ist exakt aufeinander abgestimmt, das Zusammenspiel nicht vollständig vorhersehbar. Und doch, es steckt mehr Ordnung dahinter als sichtbar erscheint: Der dritte Satz ist eine Form der Spiegelung des ersten, Flöte und Cello tauschen ihre Stimmen, und die Bewegungsrichtung der Orgelakkorde kehrt sich um. Dazwischen: eine Musik am Rande der Stille, nur Geflüstertes und Gehauchtes weht umher. Darin versteckt: Die Melodie des Chorals “Herr, dir ist nichts verborgen” von Caspar Uhlenberg aus dem Jahre 1582.

Herr, dir ist nichts verborgen;
du schaust mein Wesen ganz.
Das Gestern, Heut und Morgen,
wird hell in deinem Glanz.
Du kennst mich bis zum Grund,
ob ich mag ruh’n, ob gehen,’
ob sitzen oder stehen,
es ist dir alles kund.

The main idea of the piece is the apparent coincidence of three independent layers of music. Long melodies and short motives can be heard. The musicians start together but then continue metrically independent from each other, the outcome is not completely determined. But there is more order on second glance: the third movement mirrors the first one, flute and cello swap their parts and the chord progression in the organ moves downwards. In between: sounds on the edge of silence, whispery, breathy. And out of that emerges barely audible the melodie of the German choral “Lord, nothing is hidden from you” by Casper Uhlenberg in 1582.

Lord, nothing is hidden from you;

Yesterday, today and tomorrow
become bright in your radiance.

whether I rest or walk,
whether sitting or standing,
