Theme and Variations on Londonderry Air belegte den ersten Platz des “Angel of Creation” Kompositionswettbewerbes 2019 von Sebastian Thomson (Oxford).

Das Stück verarbeitet in sieben Variationen die sehr bekannte irische Melodie “Oh danny boy”. Das Thema beginnt mit ruhig daherschwingenden Akkorden, wird aber alsbald verwandelt und auseinandergenommen: Ein jazzinspirierter Walking Bass in “Groove”, ein jubilierender “Canon”, eine romantische Choralumspielung in “Nostaliga”, meditatives Vogelgezwitscher mit freundlichen Grüßen an Oliviér Messiaen in “Meditation”, rauschende Kaskaden in “Textures”, “durchlöcherte” Impulse und Klangballungen in “Ghosts and Clouds”, und schlussendlich ein dramatisches Finale sind die Zutaten für diese Neuinterpretation.

“Theme and Variations on Londonderry Air” for Organ has won the British “Angels of Creation” Organ Compositions Competition. The new piece will be performed and recorded by Sebastian Thomson (Oxford).

The well-known theme starts out with calm swinging chords, but is soon transformed and deconstructed through a carousel of seven highly contrasting compositional and technical ideas: a jazz-inspired bassline in “Groove”, musical jubilance in “Canon”, the melancholic 19th-century romanticism of “Nostalgia”, bird song allusions inspired by French composer Olivier Messiaen in “Meditation”, shimmering waterfalls of chords in “Textures”, whispering tone-drops and dark clusters in “Ghosts and Clouds”, and finally overwhelming tone masses in “Exultation” are the ingredients to this short contemporary look on an old, yet beautiful melody.
