Die Komposition zitiert eine kurze Passage aus Jesaja 9:
Das Volk, das in der Finsternis ging, sah ein helles Licht; über denen, die im Land des Todesschattens wohnten, strahlte ein Licht auf.
Jeder Stiefel, der dröhnend daherstampft, jeder Mantel, im Blut gewälzt, wird verbrannt, wird ein Fraß des Feuers.
Denn ein Kind wurde uns geboren, ein Sohn wurde uns geschenkt.
Licht und Finsternis, die beiden zentralen Begriffe des Jesaja-Textes bilden auch die Kristallisationspunkte der Musik: Tiefe, dunkle Klangflächen markieren den Beginn des Stückes. Die ganze Musik kreist um einen einzigen Klang: Eine Quinte mit hinzugefügter Sekunde, ein offener und zugleich schneidend unruhiger Klang. Dazu zarte, helle Klänge, unterbrochen von glockenartigen Impulsen. Zunehmende Bewegung, eine intensiv ausschlagende Melodie steigert sich zu einem großen Melisma.
Dann ein zweiter Abschnitt: Schroffe Rhythmen in einem kaum erkennbaren Kanon, wie ein stotterndes Maschinengewehr, künden von den Schrecken der Welt - die Ängste des Propheten Jesaja sind auch heute aktuell.
Schließlich eine Auflösung, ein Stehenbleiben beinahe ohne jede musikalische Regung: Das Versprechen auf Rettung, eine zerbrechliche Hoffnung in Gestalt eines Kindes.

The piece quotes a few lines from Isaiah 9:
The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.
For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.
Light and Darkness, the main themes of the biblical text become the focal point of the music too:
Low and dark textures set the beginning of the piece. The music is centered around a single sound: a fifth with an added second - a sound open and sharp at the same time. Some softer and lighter sounds join in, interrupted by bell-like impulses. More and more movement and an intense melody work up to a great melisma of the singer.
Then a second part: rough rhythms, overlayed in a complex canon and sounding like a stuttering machine gun herald the fears and terrors of the world. The world which the prophet Isaiah lived in and feared is as present today as it was thousands of years ago.
Finally relief and resolution follow. The music almost freezes and presents its promise for salvation: a child becomes the worlds fragile hope.
